550 Squadron RAF was formed at North Killingholme in November 1943 as a Lancaster heavy-bomber squadron. The Squadron grew to two flights and later to three and became one of the most efficient squadrons in Bomber Command. So successful was the squadron, it was selected to trial the maximum fuel and bomb loads a Lancaster could carry.

550 Squadron was part of Bomber Command’s No. 1 Group, an organization of fourteen stations each housing its own squadrons dotted though the countryside to the south of the Humber River.
